How this test works

What this assessment measures

Volunteers in one large online study (2018) averaged about 52 words per minute: 168,960 people, mostly on physical and laptop keyboards, with a mean of 51.56 WPM and a standard deviation of 20.2. That figure keeps uncorrected mistakes in, so it matches gross WPM here, and the volunteers chose to take part, so it is not a typical adult. This typing test measures net WPM as correct characters divided by 5 per minute, beside gross WPM and accuracy, over 1, 2 or 5 minutes, on your own device.

What this test reports

  • net words per minute
  • gross words per minute
  • accuracy
  • this sitting's precision over 2 or 5 minutes

How the task works

  1. Choose 1, 2 or 5 minutes, and say whether you are typing on a physical keyboard or a phone or tablet screen keyboard.
  2. The timer starts with your first key. Type the text as it is shown, capitals and punctuation included; Backspace is allowed.
  3. Pasting and dropping text in are refused. If several words arrive in one go and the page detects it, that run's speed is not counted. A screen-keyboard speed can include keyboard help such as swipe, prediction and autocorrect, which is why phone and keyboard results are kept apart.
  4. When the time is up the box locks and the result shows net WPM, gross WPM and accuracy, each with the sum behind it.

This task needs vision and a pointer or keyboard, and it measures response times. Times are measured on this device and browser and are reported as your own figures; they are not comparable across devices or with other people. If you use a screen reader or cannot respond quickly, the questionnaires and reasoning tests on this site are the accessible route.

Your figure is measured on this device, this keyboard and this text, in one sitting. A screen keyboard, a laptop keyboard and a desktop keyboard give different speeds for the same person, so phone and keyboard results are labelled and never compared with each other. The 2018 figure comes from self-selected volunteers who mostly typed on physical keyboards; it is context for a keyboard result, not a ranking of you, and nothing here is a certificate.

Scoring happens in this browser tab: answers and result text are not sent as analytics properties, and answers are never written to browser storage. Response times stay in this tab as well. If you are signed in, Save this result stores the scored result, never your answers, under your account. If not, Sign in with Google to save it holds the result shown in this tab until Google brings you back, then saves it and erases it from the tab.

Why this route is different

Most typing tests print one number. This one prints the sum behind it: how many characters you got right, divided by five and by the minutes, and the same for everything you typed, so you can see whether speed or accuracy is the one holding you back. Over two or five minutes it also shows how much your speed moved from minute to minute, which is the honest size of a difference between two sittings.

A small next step

Take the test twice this week at the same length and the same time of day. If the two net speeds sit inside each other's precision range, you have your current speed. Then practise accuracy rather than speed for a few days: a run with fewer corrections is usually the faster one.

Questions people ask

What is a good typing speed?

Volunteers in one large online study (2018), 168,960 people on mostly physical and laptop keyboards, averaged about 52 words per minute with a standard deviation of about 20, so a gross speed near 50 on a keyboard is ordinary among people who choose to take a typing test. Their figure counts uncorrected mistakes in, which is why it matches your gross speed rather than your net speed. On a phone screen keyboard most people type more slowly, which is why a phone result is never compared with that figure.

What does this typing test measure, and how is WPM calculated?

A word is counted as five characters, spaces and punctuation included: net WPM is the correct characters in the box at the end divided by five and by the minutes, and gross WPM counts every character in the box at the end. Accuracy is the keystrokes that added a correct character divided by all the keystrokes that added a character, so a mistake you corrected still counts against it.

Why can I not paste the text?

Because pasted text was not typed, pasting and dropping text in are refused, and if several words arrive in one go and the page detects it, the run finishes but its speed is not counted. The box asks the keyboard to turn autocorrect off, but only Safari honours that request, and a screen keyboard that enters swipe or predicted words one at a time looks like typing to the page. So a screen-keyboard speed can include keyboard help such as swipe, prediction and autocorrect, which is why phone and keyboard results are kept apart.

Does it work on a phone, and is a phone result comparable?

Yes, it works on a phone: choose the screen keyboard option and the result is labelled as a screen-keyboard speed. It is not comparable with a keyboard result or with other people, so the page never puts the two side by side.

What should I do with my figure?

Take it again at the same length on another day and compare your two net speeds with this sitting's precision range from the 2- or 5-minute test. If your accuracy is low, slowing down a little is the first thing to try.

Are my results saved or sent anywhere?

No: the text, your typing and your figures stay in this browser tab. Analytics receives only that a run started or finished, which length and keyboard were chosen, and the window size, never a speed or a character; a result is kept only if you press Save this result.
