What this assessment measures
This reading speed test times one original non-fiction passage of about three hundred words while you read it at your normal pace, then asks three comprehension questions about it. The result is words per minute for that passage on this device, printed next to how many questions you answered from the passage, because a speed you cannot back up with comprehension is not reading. The page counts the words in the passage itself, so the figure is your reading divided by your own time and nothing else.
What this test reports
- words per minute
- comprehension out of three
- seconds on the passage
How the task works
- A passage of about three hundred words appears with a timer counting up beside it.
- Read it once at the pace you would normally read an article; nothing counts down and nothing flashes.
- Press “I’ve finished reading” the moment you reach the last word, which stops the timer.
- Three comprehension questions follow with no timer at all; running the task again gives you the next passage.
This task needs vision and a pointer or keyboard, and it measures response times. Times are measured on this device and browser and are reported as your own figures; they are not comparable across devices or with other people. If you use a screen reader or cannot respond quickly, the questionnaires and reasoning tests on this site are the accessible route.

One passage on one screen, read once, is a snapshot and not a reading level. Screen size, typeface, tiredness, how familiar the subject is and whether you were interrupted all move the figure by more than the difference between two people, and nothing here can be compared with other readers, converted to a percentile or read as a reading age.
This route calculates its result in this browser tab; answers and result text are not sent as analytics properties or written to browser storage. Response times stay in this tab as well.
