What this assessment measures
This test measures five skills: vocabulary in context, grammar in use, reading comprehension, collocations, and register and tone. Thirty questions produce a MyTestAtlas score out of 100 and accuracy for each of the five skills, with every answer explained. The register questions are keyed on what fits the reader and the setting, and the review explains that judgement rather than citing a rule. It does not give a CEFR level, a grade, or a comparison with other people.

Material limit
Reading and choosing is not the same as speaking and writing, and this test never hears you say a word or reads a sentence you wrote. Thirty items also cannot sample a language. The result is your accuracy on these questions in one sitting, with no norm group and no calibration behind it.

Why this route is different
Most free level tests hand back a letter and a number and stop there. This one names the five skills separately, so a strong reader with shaky collocations sees exactly that split instead of one average that hides both halves of it.
A small next step
Pick the skill with your lowest accuracy and give it fifteen minutes a day for two weeks, using material you would read anyway: a news article for vocabulary, a work email thread for register, a recipe or a manual for reading. Then take the test again and compare the five skill rows, not the total.
Questions people ask
Does this give a CEFR level?
No, and it never will. CEFR levels come from standardized tests with trained raters who assess speaking and writing under controlled conditions; this quiz shows which skills you handled on thirty questions and which you did not.
What does the score out of 100 actually mean?
It is the share of the available points you earned, with harder questions weighted more than easier ones. It is a score on this test alone and is not equivalent to any exam band, grade or level.
Is this English level test free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no email and no payment, and the thirty questions run in your browser with the result shown as soon as you finish.
How long does the English level test take?
About ten minutes at a comfortable pace, including five short reading passages. There is no timer, so nothing is lost by reading a passage twice.
Is this British or American English?
Both. No question here turns on a British/American difference; where a word is spelled one way or the other in a sentence, either spelling is standard and nothing is scored on it.
