What this assessment measures

This test measures how you handle six areas of standard written English: subject–verb agreement, tense and aspect, articles and determiners, pronouns and reference, prepositions and word order, and punctuation. Thirty multiple-choice questions produce a score out of 100, accuracy for each of the six areas, and an explanation for every question. It cannot tell you your English level, your reading age, or how well you write.

Material limit

Thirty multiple-choice questions sample six areas of grammar and cannot cover all of them, and recognising a correct sentence is easier than writing one yourself. The result is your accuracy on these thirty items only: not a level, not a grade, and not a comparison with anyone else.

Why this route is different

A single percentage tells you nothing about what to study next. This test reports accuracy for each of the six areas on its own and shows the rule behind every question you missed, so the area you work on next is the one your own answers picked out.

A small next step

Take the three questions you found hardest and write two sentences of your own using each rule, out loud, before the end of the week. A rule you rebuild in your own words sticks better than a rule you read once in an explanation.

Questions people ask

Is this grammar test free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no email and no payment. The thirty questions run in your browser and the result appears as soon as you finish.

Is this British English or American English?

Both. Every question was written so that the correct answer is standard in British and American usage, and items where the two varieties differ were deliberately left out.

Does this grammar test give me an English level?

No. It gives a score out of 100 and accuracy for six grammar areas. A level such as A1 to C2 comes from a standardized test with trained raters, not from thirty multiple-choice questions.

How long does the grammar test take?

About ten minutes at a comfortable pace. There is no timer, so you can sit with a sentence for as long as you want before answering.

Can I see why an answer was wrong?

Yes. The answer review lists all thirty questions with the correct option, the rule it tests, and, where one applies, the public grammar page it comes from.
