What this assessment measures
This test measures spelling across six families of tricky word: doubled consonants, silent letters, the -ible and -able endings, ie and ei, homophones you can only settle from the sentence, and commonly confused near-twins. Each question shows four spellings, one of which a dictionary lists as the word. You get a score out of 100, accuracy for each family, and the dictionary entry behind every answer. It is not a level and not a reading age.

Material limit
Recognising the right spelling in a line-up of four is easier than producing it from memory with no options in front of you, so this result is a ceiling rather than a floor. Thirty words also cannot cover English spelling, and the score compares you with nobody but the answer key.

Why this route is different
Knowing you scored twenty-two out of thirty helps nobody. Reporting the six families on their own tells you whether your trouble is doubled consonants or the -ible ending, which are different habits and need different practice, and the review links each word to the dictionary entry for it.
A small next step
Write out by hand, three times each, the words you got wrong, then use two of them in a message you were going to send anyway this week. Spelling is motor memory more than knowledge, and typing a word once rarely lays it down.

Is this spelling test free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no email and no payment. The thirty questions run in your browser and the result appears as soon as you finish.
Is this British or American spelling?
Both. Every word here is spelled the same way in British and American English, and words that split between the two, such as colour and color or organise and organize, were kept out on purpose.
Are the wrong options real words?
In the single-word questions none of the three wrong options is the standard spelling of the word, though a few are forms a dictionary records as obsolete or archaic. In the sentence questions — homophones and commonly confused words — one wrong option is always a current word with a different meaning, which is the point of asking it inside a sentence.
Does a spelling test say anything about my intelligence?
No. Spelling is a learned store of word shapes, closer to memory for faces than to reasoning, and nothing here is scored as an ability.
How long does the spelling test take?
About nine minutes at a comfortable pace. There is no timer, so you can look at a word for as long as you want before choosing.
