What this assessment measures

This reflection looks at four everyday patterns. Whether company lands as being known or as watching from the edge. Whether there is one person you could hand a hard thing to. The gap between the contact you want and the contact you get. And what you do at the point the feeling is strongest. Each pattern is reported on its own, with no total. It is not a diagnosis and it cannot tell you how connected your life is.

Material limit

This is sixteen questions answered on one day, with no norm behind it, no cut-off and no total. Loneliness moves with the week, a move to a new place, a shift pattern, an illness or a loss, so a hard month reads differently from a settled one, and the questions cannot count the people in your life or judge your relationships. It is not a diagnosis of anything. If a low mood or a sense of being apart from people has stayed with you for weeks, that is worth saying out loud to a doctor or to someone you trust, and findahelpline.com lists verified helplines by country if you want to talk to someone now.

Why this route is different

A single loneliness number cannot be acted on, because the four patterns behind it need opposite things. A full diary with nobody to confide in is a different week from an empty diary with one close friend in it, and withdrawing is the only one of the four you can change on the same evening you notice it. Separated, you can see which one is actually moving.

A small next step

Take the pattern that stood out and run one small test against it this week. If it was the contact gap, put one specific plan in the diary rather than waiting for one to arrive. If it was withdrawing, accept the next invitation you would have turned down and give yourself permission to leave early. Write one line afterwards about how it actually went, because the prediction and the outcome are rarely the same.

Questions people ask

What does a loneliness test measure?

This one shows how four patterns appeared in your own answers today: feeling unseen in company, missing someone to confide in, the gap between the contact you want and the contact you get, and withdrawing when it hurts. It describes your answers, not your life, and there is no cut-off behind it.

What is the difference between loneliness and being alone?

The World Health Organization describes loneliness as a subjective, distressing feeling that arises when there is a gap between the social connections a person has and those they want or need, while social isolation is the objective state of having few relationships and interactions. You can be alone without being lonely, and lonely in a crowded room.

Is this the standard loneliness questionnaire?

No. The best-known research scales were not opened, quoted or paraphrased for this page. Every question here was written from public definitions published by the WHO Commission on Social Connection and the Campaign to End Loneliness, which are linked at the bottom of the page.

Is loneliness a health problem?

Public health bodies treat it as one. The WHO Commission on Social Connection reports that about one in six people worldwide is affected by loneliness. That is a statement about populations, not about you or your result.

Are my answers saved anywhere?

No. There is no account and no sign-up, and the questions are free to take. Your answers and your result stay in this browser tab and are gone when you close or reset it.
