Span and recognition tasks
Recognise which words were on the list
Read twelve words, then decide for twenty-four words whether each was on the list. The result separates hits, misses, false alarms and correct rejections.
What this assessment measures
This word-recognition task shows twelve everyday words, then mixes them with twelve new words and asks which you saw. The result separates the four outcomes: listed words you recognised, listed words you missed, new words you wrongly accepted, and new words you correctly rejected.
What this test reports

- misses
- false alarms

How the task works
- Twelve everyday words appear for two seconds each.
- Then twenty-four words appear one at a time, half from the list and half new.
- Press S or tap Seen if the word was on the list, N or New if it was not.
- No time limit on the answers.
This task needs vision and a pointer or keyboard, and it measures response times. Times are measured on this device and browser and are reported as your own figures; they are not comparable across devices or with other people. If you use a screen reader or cannot respond quickly, the questionnaires and reasoning tests on this site are the accessible route.
