AtlasMemoryVerbal Memory Test

Span and recognition tasks

Track a growing list of words until three mistakes

Words appear one at a time; say whether each appeared before in this run. The list grows as you go and three mistakes end it. The result is how many words you tracked.

What this assessment measures

A running recognition task: each word is either new or one you have already seen in this run, and you say which. The list of seen words grows with every new word. Three mistakes end the run, and the result is the number of correct judgements you made before that.

What this test reports

  • correct judgements
  • distinct words shown

How the task works

  1. A word appears; press S or tap Seen if it has appeared earlier in this run, N or New if it has not.
  2. New words keep entering the running list.
  3. Three mistakes end the run.
  4. There is no time limit on each answer.

This task needs vision and a pointer or keyboard, and it measures response times. Times are measured on this device and browser and are reported as your own figures; they are not comparable across devices or with other people. If you use a screen reader or cannot respond quickly, the questionnaires and reasoning tests on this site are the accessible route.

Material limit

A single run is a snapshot of recognition memory on this day, not a memory diagnosis, and not comparable with other people or with any published average.

This route calculates its result in this browser tab; answers and result text are not sent as analytics properties or written to browser storage. Response times stay in this tab as well.

Why this route is different

The task has no fixed length, so it measures how long you can keep the running list straight rather than how you do on a fixed set.

A small next step

Notice whether your mistakes were seen words called new or new words called seen; the two point to different strategies.
